Kari Duke

Kari Duke is an Edmonton based, self-taught painter who doesn’t have to travel far to find inspiration. Living in a small community near the University of Alberta, she is surrounded by the urban alleys and side streets that come to life on her canvases. Kari originally lived in Hope, British Columbia for 25 years with her husband and two children; there she painted the gardens and mountain sceneries that surrounded their home. A sudden turn of events found Kari moving to Edmonton in the middle of January to a small neighbourhood covered in snow. Despite a rough start, she eventually found herself overcome by a deep appreciation for the urban setting in which she found herself and set to work painting and photographing it. Kari’s back alley scenes have struck a cord with people not only in Alberta but all across Canada. Her colorful paintings lend a fresh, confident feel to a subject that is often overlooked. Today, Kari Duke is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, an Associate member of the Society of Western Canadian Artists and is represented in galleries across Canada.

I love the messiness of spring, the lovely smell of the mud, the melting snow as it’s dripping down off the roofs. I find the reflections in the puddles after a heavy rain or the play of light on the old fences to be an exciting subject matter. The naked trees in the winter, the deep snow, and the simplicity of the old back alleys in changing seasons, is what draws me in time and time again. After I found my back alleys and how beautiful they are I would never leave this area. It’s taught me to appreciate what’s around me instead of wishing for what I don’t have. Maybe if you love something well enough, everything becomes beautiful.
