Andris Leimanis
Andris Leimanis is a Canadian artist who has lived in Montreal since 1965. He was born in Riga, Latvia. In 1974, Lemainis graduated with honors from Loyola College in Montreal with a BA; in 1976, he obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree from Syracuse University in New York State. He turned to painting full-time that year. Previously he worked as an illustrator and art director in Montreal and Toronto. He introduced the readers of the former Montreal Star to his "Montreal Scenes" on more than a dozen occasions between 1973 and 1979.
His Montreal scenes combine the old and the new, striking a blance between nostalgia and a more contemporary pace. His paintings cover predominantly the activity of the inner city, and such his images are both timely and timeless. Beginning in 2002, he elaborated a completely new technical approach to his paintings, which have brought his vision into an even stronger dialogue with contemporary paintings; he paints directly onto the canvas, then applies a sheet of acrylic onto which he paints the foreground scene again in oil. The result is a painting with an unquestionable vitality, as light passes throught the acrylic and radiates back to the spectator from a mulitude of directions, influsing the oil paint with varying intensities according to the viewer's perspective.
